After our recent post on Cashback, I decided to look at some alternative ways to raise money. Through some research online and from regularly shopping on a particular website, I was able to come across something great. Surprisingly, it is on a well know site known as Amazon who have a reported 310 million active user globally for online purchases. Amazon is constantly expanding and in recent years net sales have increased though it came with loss in revenue, especially due to its global expansion.
Called Amazon Smile, it allows users to spend as normal but raise money for charity from purchases. There are a large array of charities available, including Muscular Dystrophy UK, Cancer Research UK and some local/ international charities as well. Every time you shop via smile.amazon.co.uk you will raise 0.5% for your selected charity, which is nice. It makes sense that Amazon has done this, especially with the figures above showing that Amazon is continuously expanding.
Step 1 : Sign Up to Amazon Smile
First of all you will need to sign up by going to smile.amazon.co.uk and logging in with your Amazon account. If you don’t have an account you will need to make one.
Fortunately, if you are already an Amazon Prime customer, you can still benefit from next day delivery and exclusive offers. If you don’t already have Prime, you can check out this guide by Digital Trends to learn how you can get it. As students get Amazon Prime Student, you can get it free on trial/ at a discounted price if you are a student. Before getting Prime it is best recommended that you try the trial to see if it’s for you.
Step 2 : Select Your Charity
Once you have signed up, you will need to select a charity. There are plenty to choose from but in the example, I use the search bar to look for ‘Muscular Dystrophy UK’. Unfortunately, you can only support one charity at a time so choose wisely. However, you can change charities at any point
To change your charity you need to select ‘Supporting: [charity name]’ on the main Amazon Smile page.
Step 3 : Remember Page
Before you go on ahead and start shopping you will want to bookmark the page which is easily done on your browser. In the example, I just simply click the star icon on the Google Chrome search bar and save it to my bookmarks folder.
Amazon Shopping APP
Alternatively you could get the Amazon Smile Assistant installed. Once its installed, you can then configure it for Smile but don’t worry it will redirect you.
After enabling Smile you get redirected to a page confirming the plug-in has been enabled. Now you will not need to worry about forgetting to use Smile when using Amazon Smile.
Step 4 : Get Shopping!
Once you have Amazon Smile set up and bookmarked, it is time to start shopping. All you need to do is shop as normal and 0.5% will do straight to your selected charity.
This post has taught you how to get Amazon Smile works. Hopefully this post has enabled you to get started with Smile and that it encourages you to make a difference by shopping through Amazon as normal.
